Careers for a Computer Science Major

The computer science field is a fascinating one, and by earning a degree in the subject, you can expect to be apart of an evolving and lucrative industry. There are dozens of careers that are available to computer science majors, and many companies are desperate for tech-savvy individuals. Here are just a few of the careers you could pursue with a computer science major.

Software Designer

Many individuals graduating from college with a computer science degree earn a job in software design. There are numerous entry-level software design positions available, but this is anything but a humdrum job. Software designers work in technology companies to conceptualize and design software and work out all the kinks in the process. Many software designers work with issues related to computer security, or develop mobile Internet software.

Research Positions

Many computer science majors apply their knowledge to real-world problems. Some may choose to develop new ways to use computers; they may earn a position in a research university or an industrial laboratory. Entry-level positions in this are rare; most institutions require researchers to have an advanced degree. Computer science majors may also put their knowledge to the test by applying algorithms to devise the most effective solutions for computationally intensive issues.

IT Positions

Nearly every company has the need for an IT professional, so many computer science majors choose to obtain an entry-level position in the IT field following college. These professionals perform routine maintenance tasks on company computers, or work to ensure a company’s files are stored safely.

Eliminate the Errors of Manual Charts

The picture archiving and communications system is a relatively new development in the healthcare industry. In a nutshell, it creates digital images of important files that are uploaded into the system so that there is no need for hard film copies. The files are first captured, and then displayed by the system through means of digital transportation. Essentially, PACS originated from a need to place all important documents and files into a system that could be accessed by multiple professionals; the files can even be remotely accessed by several users at one time.

The biggest advantage the healthcare industry has for using PACS is the fact that there are no paper files to transport. The benefit of not having hard copies really comes into play when a patient has to visit multiple physicians, radiologists or other healthcare professional at the same time. Prior to the system, a patient would have to obtain several copies of the same records so that they could show each new provider their medical history. Occasionally, there would also be a need for multiples of the same procedure or test because the results were not easily distributed to all parties.

Aside from being more convenient for the patient to see multiple practitioners at the same time, the archiving system also works toward eliminating the mistakes in care that result from the misinterpretation of a handwritten chart. This in turn makes it far less likely for a patient to be given the wrong diagnosis, medication or treatment because all practitioners involved, whether they are at a hospital or routine health clinic, have the opportunity to review the same files before initiating anything.

Making your PC run faster!

How often has it happened that you need to get some work done fast and your PC slowed down to a miserable pace? It can be very frustrating when you have to wait for windows to minimize or websites to open just because your laptop or PC isn’t running as fast as it used to. You haven’t done anything ‘fishy’ but have no clue why your computer is slowing down!

Technology can be confusing at times but you can make your PC run much faster by following some simple steps!

  1. People tend to install free software or programs that seem interesting for the moment but then don’t even take a second look at it! Go through the list of programs installed on your PC and uninstall anything and everything that you don’t use.
  2. Files can take up a lot of space on your hard disk drive and this can be causing your PC to become slow. So delete any file that you don’t really need including videos and MP3s. Games installed on the PC can also slow it down so if you are not playing it, send it off to the recycle bin!
  3. Your PC could be slowing down because it has limited RAM space. Check this up and upgrade it if you need your PC to run much faster. Having less that required RAM on your PC would mean that you can’t open too many windows or run multiple programs at one time.
  4. Defragment your hard disk drive regularly. Simple go to My Computer, then go to Local Disk. Click on the Tools button and follow the steps to defragment.

Add a Questionnaire to Your Website

Adding a survey to your website gives you vital information as to how your site is working well for you, what may be wrong with your site and what your customers are looking for. Surveys can be added to your website using HTML code which is short for Hypertext Markup Language. Putting a survey onto your website is a fairly simple process, but you will need to have some basic knowledge of computers.

Your first task will be to find a survey generator website. These companies offer survey software directly on their website to construct a survey to meet your needs. You will need to decide what types of questions you want answered, how many questions you will have and what visual style you are looking for. Most companies will need a username and password and some additional information to get you started.

Once you have created your profile, you will need to create your survey. You will want to choose how your customers will answer each question. Will they have multiple choice answers or a form to input their answers? Not all survey companies give you these options, so you will want to check before you begin the process. Some companies will also let you enhance your survey with pictures and will even email you when someone participates in your survey.

Once your survey is complete, save it. You will either be given the HTML code at this point or you may have to click “get code.” Copy the HTML code and paste it into the proper place on your website. If needed, contact your website publisher for assistance.

Improve your Video Marketing Using XVID

Every business using video marketing needs to make sure they have selected the best type of format that allows a high quality of sound and video.  The XVID codec is one important element that any website owner needs to use when creating videos. It not only allows the quick transfer of video files over networks but also saves space on computers.  This is possible because the XVID codec can compress videos by removing information that is not useful without interfering with the high quality of the video. The compression of the video files will reduce the amount of bandwidth that the users will need to transmit the videos. With the XVID codec you can encrypt data signals and then decode the signals to enable users to carry out the necessary editing processes.

The best thing about the XVID codec is that the website owners do not have to spend money downloading the program because it is offered for free without any restrictions or limits in terms of features.  Also, users do not have to worry about spyware with this codec as it does not contain this or any other malicious programs. The other benefit to enjoy is the XVID codec is easy to install and users just need to follow the instructions provided.  With this tool, website owners will increase their chances of attracting more visitors to their websites which will lead to more clients.  This is all in part to the high quality videos posted and edited with the XVID.

The Problem of Online Bullying

There is no question that the Internet is used for a variety of good things. It’s used to obtain information, pay bills, find a special someone, share music files via Ares Galaxy and have endless hours of fun playing various online games. It’s become the accepted way that people communicate and handle their business matters. Still, with every bright spot the Internet has, there are dark features to it that cloud the true intent and purpose of the Internet. One of those things is the abuse and harassment of teenagers occurring on social media sites such as MySpace and Facebook.

Cyber bullying is no laughing matter. There have been several cases of cyber bullying, such as the cases involved Phoebe Prince and Megan Meier. In both instances these girls ended up committing suicide. In both cases there was a long history of harassment where cruel and hateful messages were exchanged. It was mean and thoughtless and it cost someone their life.

The issue lies in being able to know the difference. Today social media sites give kids the opportunity to do their humiliating in a very large, and public, forum. They are able to talk to harass and ridicule other students and neighborhood kids for their imperfections and their differences, and do it all with the click of the mouse button.

Of course there are kids who are able to struggle through, and the ridicule is brushed aside or dealt with in a relatively healthy way. However, there are a number of kids who don’t have the capacity to brush off the instant messages, wall postings, and electronic hate mail that seems to be constantly thrown at some kids.

The issue with the bullying that occurs online is that there isn’t a reliable, or fair enough, monitoring system to be stopping this before the result is tragic. It’s a growing problem and one that requires a solution. Until that solution is reached there is no telling what it will lead to.

Utilizing Different Programming Languages

There are about as many different programming languages available to computer users as there are users to take advantage of the programs written in these languages. Some of the languages are more recognizable than others, plus the programs that use them seem to be simpler, at least to some users, to navigate. Therefore, it is not unusual to hear of users finding programs with specific programming languages that they like and sticking with them.

Unfortunately, not all programming languages lend themselves to every aspect of computer usage. For example, some software and hardware may actually run better because of a different programming language.

One programming language may actually make it easier for the user to access the Internet. For those who are involved in web design, this can be an asset, as it would give more people the chance to see their work. However, again, because of fear that the program using a different programming language won’t work as well as the one with which a user is familiar, there may be a reluctance to change.

For this reason, some programming companies are actually creating websites or using other forms of communication to introduce their programming language to users and educate them. These companies are aware of the reluctance of users to move away from their comfortable programs that use PHP scripting or other programming languages, but they want them to have the benefits that other programming languages can offer.

These companies want others to learn of the benefits that they can achieve from using different programs that were written in lesser-known or even brand new programming languages. To this end, they provide ways for users to learn about the new programming languages, in the hopes they will decide to move out of their “comfort zone” and give theirs a try.

How to Format Body Text

Web pages are filled with text. Sometimes the information is organized neatly in a visually appealing way that makes it easier to read. Other times it can be jumbled up and confusing to navigate. It’s important that text is simple to read, well organized, and that fonts and styles are used properly.  And doing this is easy when you use a word processor like the one you can download from openoffice.org.

Fonts

Choosing the right font can make all the difference. Fonts fall into two main categories: serif and sans serif. Serifs are the little embellishments on letters, like little “feet” on a capital A. Serif fonts, such as Garamond or Times New Roman, are easier to read because the letters naturally flow together, making them a better choice for body text. Sans serif fonts, such as Helvetica or Gill Sans, have straight edges and are more difficult to read, causing your eyes to pause and linger as they move across the page, and are good for headlines and titles.

Headers

Headers help break up large blocks of text, and clearly point out separate ideas.

Bullets and Numbered Lists

Whenever you have long lists, use bullet points or numbers. They help break out specific information and list it in a way that’s easy to understand.

Example:

§                      Important fact

§                      Another important fact

§                      A third important fact

Bolded Text and Italics

Italicized text is great for conveying internal dialog, setting apart text in a different language, or stressing certain words. Consider the different meanings in the phrase “love your pets, don’t love your pets.”

Bolded text can be used in similar ways.

Links

The most commonly recognized formatting for web links is blue underlined text. Most programs will format links automatically.

Consistency

The single most important thing when formatting text is to keep your style consistent. If each page looks different from the rest, your text will end up looking sloppy and thrown together at the last minute.
